PESHAWAR:
Returning Officer Riaz Awan said on Wednesday that 26 candidates, including eight women, were elected unopposed from three wards of Peshawar district which come under his supervision.
“Overall, 26 candidates have been elected unopposed,” Awan told The Express Tribune.
Awan was appointed by the election commission as RO for wards 56, 57 and 58 for the local government elections. He said a total of 340 forms were submitted by aspiring candidates of which 17 were rejected due to incomplete documents.
He added 26 candidates withdrew from the contest and as many were elected unopposed. He added that the remaining 271 candidates would contest the election on May 30.
Meanwhile, a high-level meeting was held on Tuesday at Peshawar Deputy Commissioner Riaz Mehsud’s office. Mehsud, who is also the district returning officer (DRO), chaired the meeting.
He instructed all ROs and AROs to visit their relevant polling stations and submit their progress report by 10am on Friday afternoon. He warned action would be taken against any official who failed to meet the deadline.
It was further decided that 12,000 officials, including 5,000 women staffers, would be appointed at 976 polling stations in Peshawar district for 2,800 polling booths.
