The protesters asks the government to introduce administrative reforms at the Lesco.
LAHORE:
Hundreds of members of the All Pakistan WADPA Hydro Electric Workers’ Union staged a sit-in in front of Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) headquarters on Monday demanding that the government withdraw its plan to privatise some power distribution companies.
They asked the government to introduce administrative reforms at the Lesco, the Faisalabad Electric Supply Company, the Gujranwala Electric Supply Company and the Islamabad Electric Supply Company by taking control of their management from private members of the board of governors.
The protesters said that in addition to billions of rupees in subsidies, the Karachi Electric Supply Company had been receiving 650 megawatts from the Wapda daily. Still, they said, the company had not been generating electricity through their own thermal power station.
They said that under Articles 3 and 9 of the Constitution of Pakistan, it was the government’s responsibility to provide citizens’ basic needs.
