Remembering a giant: Tehrir Mein Tasweer – for Manto

Press Release May 17, 2015

LAHORE: Saadat Hassan Manto’s writings are an apt representation of Pakistan’s society, Nusrat Jalal Manto said at the inauguration of an art exhibit paying tribute to her father at the National College of Arts on Monday. The event was held in connection with Manto’s 103rd birth anniversary. The exhibition Tehrir Mein Tasweer showcased works by NCA student Sikandar Nawaz Rajput. The artist has attempted to depict Manto’s writings in his work. NCA Principal Murtaza Jaffery had invited all three of Manto’s daughters – Nusrat Manto, Nighat Manto and Nuzhat Manto – to the inauguration. Nusrat Manto was the chief guest at the event. She appreciated the artist’s tribute to Manto and said that Rajput had masterfully depicted Manto’s thoughts on canvas. She said Rajput had presented the coat, pen, spectacles, chair and shirt – most popular elements of Manto’s writings – in a way that resonated with Manto’s personal thoughts and ideas. Jaffery cut a birthday cake and also declared the work a masterpiece.
