ISLAMABAD: A lawyer for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has lodged a complaint with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan over alleged threats that he had received from a senior PTI leader.

Taking advantage of a 30 minute interval taken by Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk during Monday's proceeding of Judicial Commission, Advocate Salman Akram Raja approached the PTI chief and briefed him about threats he had received from PTI’s central leader Arif Alvi over a minor issue on micro blogging site Twitter.

Standing right behind the podium, from where Supreme Court lawyers usually address the judges, Raja pleaded his personal case before Imran, who was sitting in the first row where litigants wait for their turn.

According to details, Raja had tweeted on May 10 that there was a difference between personal perceptions based on no evidence, representation and defence. Judicial decisions, he said, are based on evidence.

Responding to his tweet, Alvi urged the ECP lawyer to avoid commenting on the micro blogging site in order to ensure that justice is done.

Explaining his position, Raja said that his tweet was general and not directed to the judicial commission’s proceedings. He alleged that this was not the end of this issue, as the PTI leader started disseminating threatening messages that lawyers like Raja should be hanged.

After hearing Raja’s side of the story, Imran apologised and asked his party's central information secretary Dr Shireen Mazari to look into this issue and seek an explanation from Alvi for such messages.

On this, Raja told Imran that Mazari too had voiced her opinion about his tweet, calling it 'interesting'.

“How my tweet was an interesting thing for Mazari?,” asked Raja.

After Monday's hearing, Imran assured Raja to resolve the matter amicably.

Addressing the PTI chief, Raja said, “I would only speak the truth and narrate the facts before the inquiry commission in this case,” to which PTI chief expressed his agreement and asked ECP lawyer to do his work on merit.

After the proceedings, Raja again took to the social media platform and tweeted that Imran Khan had apologised to him in the SC on Monday for the verbal attacks mounted by PTI leaders and trolls adding that there is a mutual respect between him and PTI chief.
