Ramazan preparation?: Vegetable, pulses’ price goes up

Prices of vegetables, pulses and other grocery items of daily use have gone up amid short supply during last week.
A random survey of wholesale, Sunday and retail markets in the twin cities revealed that prices of some essential kitchen items witnessed a sharp rise during the last couple of weeks with no visible factor behind the prices.
The price of tomato went up during the week with per kg price of Rs68 to Rs75 in the retail market, against Rs48 per kg in the week before.
The same commodity was available at Rs25 per kg in retail markets but traders were linking the hike to a short supply. Prices of cucumber, pumpkin, eggplant, carrot, Indian round gourd, okra and bitter gourd also witnessed upward trend during outgoing week.

The price of watermelon, however, witnessed a downward trend with their price coming down to Rs26 per kg from Rs40 per kg last week.
Rates of pulses particularly gram pulse (channa) and mash went up during the last week as wholesalers jacked up price of a 40kg bag of channa from Rs2,800 to Rs3,600 and 40kg bag of mash from Rs6,400 to Rs7600.
Market sources termed the hike in pulses’ price artificial saying hoarders were trying to amass profit before and during Ramazan.
