Nearly 3 months on: Rafique Rajwana named new Punjab governor
Swearing-in ceremony to be held in coming days
ISLAMABAD:
After almost three months of hiatus, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senator Rafique Rajwana has been appointed as the new Punjab governor.
Rajwana, who is not only a Seraiki speaking but also belongs to south Punjab (Multan), called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Thursday morning where the premier appreciated his services to the party and recommended him as a governor of Punjab.
He assured PM Nawaz that he would try his level best to live up to the expectations of the party leadership, said a handout issued by the PM House. The swearing-in ceremony will be held in the upcoming days. The post was lying vacant since January after the resignation of Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar who later joined the PTI.
Advocate Mohammad Azhar Siddique, who filed a petition in the Lahore High Court, said, “Today [Thursday] was the last day for the federal government to appoint Punjab governor.”
The new governor, while talking to The Express Tribune, said he would meet the expectations of the party’s top leadership by using the platform of Punjab governor.
He said the PML-N president Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and other senior leaders have fulfilled another promise with the people of south Punjab by appointing the new governor from their area.
According to sources in the PML-N, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar persuaded Shahbaz Sharif to give Rajwana the chance to fill the slot. They said Dar even gave personal assurance to Shahbaz about Rajwana’s conduct and way of working with the Punjab government.
