A two-day career fair kicked off in Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Science and Technology in Swabi on Thursday.

The Industrial Open House and Career Fair is held annually and this year over 40 multinational and local companies participated in the initiative, stated a press release issued by the university.

Speaking on the occasion, former chief minister of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and president of Society for the Promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Pakistan (SOPREST) Shamsul Mulk highlighted the importance of nurturing a culture of research which accounts for society’s needs.

According to the press release, Mulk emphasised progress in the province can only be ensured through result-oriented research.

He billed the career fair as a platform for businessmen, academics and students to come together and connect. Mulk said, “The event provides an opportunity for fresh graduates to find employment.”

Interaction

Jehangir Bashar, the institute’s rector, said the initiative is a much-awaited event on the university’s calendar as it enables representatives of industries to interact with students.

Addressing participants at the fair, Haroon Wahid, HR head of a multinational company, said young people in Pakistan have considerable talent and are particularly hard-working.

“Wahid said his company selects young engineers through a rigorous process of selection and has found graduates from GIK to be most competent,” read the press release.

Academics Pro-Rector Dr Javed Chattha said the initiative is an essential part of the institute’s programme and serves as a research and development centre to boost the industrial sector.
