KARACHI: Two people were crushed to death while over a dozen other people, including women and children, were wounded when a coach driver lost control of his vehicle in Liaquatabad on Tuesday afternoon.

The accident took place near Firdous Shopping Mall when a speeding Hyderabad-bound passenger coach ran over multiple motorcycles and a rickshaw as well as pedestrians. As a result, a young man riding a motorcycle was killed on the spot and over a dozen people were left injured. The deceased and injured were immediately rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where a woman succumbed to her injuries.

The motorcyclist was later identified as 28-year-old Fahd, son of Mushtaq and a resident of Federal B Area. Meanwhile, the woman was identified as 30-year-old Bilquis, wife of Hanif. She was a resident of Surjani Town who was a passenger on the rickshaw.

Police officials said that the driver lost control of the coach and hit at least four motorcycles, then the rickshaw and pedestrians. Following the incident, a mob gathered and set the coach on fire. They also tried to beat up the driver.

Fire tenders reached the site to try to put out the fire but the coach was completely destroyed. Meanwhile, the police arrived and took custody of the driver, taking him to Liaquatabad police station.

“We have arrested the coach driver responsible for the accident,” DSP Wajahat Hussain told The Express Tribune, adding that the driver tried to defend himself by stating that the vehicle’s brakes had failed.

Liaquatabad SHO Abdul Haq said that the coach was being examined to ascertain why the accident occurred, while a murder case would be registered against the driver upon the complaint of Fahd’s family.

The officer revealed that a woman and two children were among those injured, adding that all the injured people were said to be out of danger.
