Trott struggled for runs on his return to the Test arena during England's 1-1 drawn series with West Indies in the Caribbean whcih concluded on Sunday. He had managed just 72 runs in six innings including three ducks.
"This was a tough decision to make but I don't feel my game is at the level you need to be at to play for England," said Trott in an England and Wales Cricket Board statement. "I was honoured to be given the opportunity to come back and play international cricket again and I'm disappointed it didn't work out."
The West Indies series saw the 34-year-old Warwickshire right-hander recalled by England for the first time since the 2013/14 Ashes series in Australia, with what team officials later said was "situational anxiety".
West Indies defied the odds to complete a series-levelling five-wicket victory over England on the third day of the third and final Test on Sunday.
Set a daunting target of 192 after the tourists were dismissed for 123 in their second innings, a 108-run fifth-wicket partnership between Darren Bravo and Jermaine Blackwood tilted the match decisively the Caribbean side’s way.
