FAISALABAD:

Former Punjab senior minister Raja Riaz Ahmad and scores of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) workers and residents of the area on Monday staged a protest demonstration on Jail Road against the installation of speed breakers on Rajaywala Road.

Carrying banners and placards, the protesters gathered at Jail Road near Ambanwali Puli and blocked it for several hours. Addressing the protesters, Ahmad said the district administration had installed eight speed breakers on the 1.5 kilometres-long Rajaywala Road.

He said the speed breakers were obstructing traffic. He said several people had been injured in accidents because of the speed breakers.

The protesters chanted slogans against the district government and demanded removal of the speed breakers.

On being informed, Operations SSP Asif Ikram and Civil Lines SHO Mian Abid and a police team reached the spot and pacified the protesters by assuring them that the issue would be taken up by district authorities and resolved amicably.

The protesters dispersed on this assurance. They said they would protest again if the speed breakers were not removed within a week.
