KARACHI: The Sindh Home Department on Friday formed a joint investigation team (JIT) to probe the allegations levelled by SSP Rao Anwar against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) a day earlier.

Announcing the arrest of two suspects at a news conference, Anwar said they were members of India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). According to the SSP, the suspects, Tahir alias Lamba and Mama Junaid, also belonged to the MQM and had been sent to India for training in the past.

SSP Anwar also accused the MQM of being a terrorist organisation, claiming that all the senior leaders of the MQM including its chief Altaf Hussain were involved in spreading terror in the country.

“To probe SSP Anwar’s claims, the home department on the request of the Karachi police has formed a JIT to probe the claims of SSP Rao Anwar which he levelled against Tahir alias Lamba and Junaid Khan in a press conference yesterday [Thursday],” confirmed Karachi police spokesperson inspector Atiq Shaikh while talking to The Express Tribune.

The spokesperson further stated that Additional IG Karachi Ghulam Qadir Thebo has recommended Criminal Investigation Agency (CIA) chief DIG Sultan Khawaja to lead the JIT while Zone East police chief DIG Munir Shaikh will be the member of the team.

The Rangers, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and intelligence agencies including ISI, MI and IB have been asked to nominate their representatives.

New SSP Malir

After suspension of SSP Rao Anwar on his ‘unusual’ press conference on Thursday, Dr Najeeb Khan has been appointed as the new SSP Malir on Friday. Najeeb was serving as an SP in the same district.
