Justice Ijaz takes notice of police torture of students and teachers who protested outside the Punjab Assembly.
LAHORE:
The Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court (LHC), Justice Ijaz Chaudhry on Thursday took suo motu notice of the police torture of teachers and students who protested outside the Punjab Assembly.
The clash erupted on Wednesday when a large number of students and teachers gathered outside the assembly to protest against the privatisation of educational institutions. They also condemned the formation of the board of governors in several colleges.
Police baton-charged the protesters, who responded by throwing stones, smashing windows in two MPAs’ cars, breaking CCTV cameras and destroying furniture used by security officials.
The police arrested some 20 teachers and 10 students. They were detained at Qila Gujjar Singh police station and Race Course police station. Constable Muhammad Shafi and several IJT activists were injured in the clashes.
The court has asked IG Punjab Tariq Saleem Dogar to submit a detailed report on January 12.
This is the first suo motu notice taken by Justice Ijaz Chaudhry after taking oath as the LHC Chief Justice today (Thursday).
More protests
On Thursday, protests by students continued throughout the province but this time they were also to condemn the alleged police torture on students and teachers. Thousands of students took to the streets in Multan and Rawalpindi, chanting slogans against the government and demanding the withdrawal of the decision to privatise colleges.
