KARACHI:

Two anti-terrorism courts (ATCs) on Thursday convicted four accused to five years in jail after finding them guilty of extortion charges registered against them a year ago.

The accused, Adnan, Arsalan and Ibrahim, were convicted by the ATC-VI. They were caught red-handed by the Pakistan Bazar police in January last year when they were collecting extortion money from a businessman, the prosecution said. The arrests were made on the complaint of the businessman, whose name has been kept confidential.

The ATC-VI judge, Abdul Naeem Memon, after finding the three men guilty of the offence sentenced them to five years in jail, reading the charge under the Anti-Terrorism Act. As unlicensed weapons were also seized from them, they were also awarded an additional seven years imprisonment. The ATC-V judge, Jawaid Alam, also sentenced another extortionist, Nadeem Nasir, to five years in jail.
