KARACHI:

The Pakistan men’s handball team left for Muscat on Thursday to participate in the fifth Asian Men’s and Women’s Beach Handball Championship, where they will face Iran in their first match of the championship, which is set to commence at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, Muscat, Oman on Friday.

Pakistan are participating in the men’s event along with hosts Oman, defending champions Qatar, Bahrain, Vietnam, and Iran.

The national team has maintained a good record in the competition, finishing third in the first championship held in 2004, first in the second edition (2007) and fourth in the third. However, they did not participate in the 2013 tournament due to financial constraints.

Pakistan will play against Qatar on Saturday and then face Bahrain after a day’s rest.

The top three teams from this championship will qualify for the next round World Beach Handball Championship to be held in Hungary in 2016.
