
Senior minister Raja Riaz on Wednesday issued directives approving the schedule for the closure of canals. He directed all Irrigation Department officials to prepare ahead of the de-silting operation.
According to the schedule, Lower Jhelum and Rasul Qadir Link Canal will remain closed from December 26 to January 1, Qasirabad Baloki Link Canal from December 27 to January 13, Lower Bari Doab from December 27 to January 13, Lower Bari Doab and Baloki Sulemanki Link Canal from December 29 to January 15, Upper Pakpattan and Eastern Sadiqia Canal from December 30 to January 16, Upper Jhelum Canal from January 1 to January 29, Lower Branch Canal (barring Jhang Branch) from January 13 to January 30, Jhang Branch from December 27 to January 13, Upper Bahawalpur Canal from January 13 to January 30, Upper Chenab Canal from December 26 to January 1 and Central Bari Doab Canal from December 27 to January 13.
The Irrigation Department has also announced the schedule for closure of Tarbela Command Canal.
Under the schedule, Thai Canal will be closed from January 13 to January 30, Tremor Canal and Tremor Sindh Nai Link from January 10 to January 27 and SMB Canal from January 11 to January 28, Lower Pakapattan from January 1 to January 29, Bahawalpur Canal from January 13 to January 30, Panjnad Canals from January 5 to January 22, Taunsa Canals from December 31 to January 17. Riaz instructed the department to send the schedule to all chief engineers so that timely opening and closing of canals could be ensured.
