“To ensure occupational health and safety, we had introduced Emergency Services Reforms in 2002 but they could not be implemented due to lack of will of the quarters concerned,” Punjab Emergency Services and Emergency Services Academy Director General Rizwan Naseer said on Tuesday.
He was speaking at a seminar on the eve of World Day for Safety and Health at Work. “The International Labour Organisation says that nearly 860,000 people are injured on the job per day and 6,400 die worldwide from an occupational accident or a disease,” Naseer said.
He said dealing with hazards related to occupational health and safety was a prime duty of Rescue1122. “In order to ensure public safety, we have launched several projects including a Community Safety Programme to educate people in this regard,” he said. Naseer said illegally built buildings in the Walled City had resulted in many health and safety hazards for citizens.
