ANZAC Day: Australia, Pakistan armies play cricket

The Australian High Commission commemorated the centenary of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) on Saturday with a dawn service. To mark the day, the Australian Army cricket team played a T20 match, the last in a three-match series, against the Pakistan Army. Australian High Commissioner Peter Heyward said the ANZAC Centenary was a significant milestone in Australia’s history in relation to the Gallipoli campaign of WWI, said a press release. Three units, now of the Pakistan Army, served in the Gallipoli campaign of 1915 against Turkey. They were the 89th Punjab now 1/Baloch, Jacob’s Battery and Kohat Battery which are now part of 1st Self-Propelled Regiment (Artillery) Pakistan Army. More than 8,700 ANZACs lost their lives during the Gallipoli campaign.
