Basit hands in resignation

Rift between members causes KCCA selector’s retraction

KARACHI:
In a surprising move, former Test cricketer Basit Ali resigned as a member of the selection committee of the Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA) just after over two months at the post.

“I have resigned and decided not to work as a KCCA selector,” Ali told The Express Tribune as he refused to give reasons behind the sudden move.

“I cannot give the reason for my decision, however I will give an explanation to the KCCA President Sirajul Islam Bukhari.”

Ali, a right-handed batsman who played 19 Tests and 50 One-Day Internationals for Pakistan, was appointed as a member of the selection committee in September.

Former fast-bowler Jalaluddin heads the committee while former first-class cricketer Zafar Ahmed is the third member.

Though Ali refrained from giving any specific reasons for his move, a KCCA official told The Express Tribune that infighting in the committee led to his decision.

“There was a rift in the selection committee as both the other selectors were not happy with the way Ali worked.”

The official said Ali, who was more prominent than the other two selectors, had the main say in selection decisions. “Ali used to make the main decisions in selection matters whereas the other two had little say.”

He said both, Jalaluddin and Ahmed, did not agree with Ali on several occasions. “The other two selectors opposed his decisions but he would remain adamant.”

Meanwhile, the KCCA president said that he had not received any message from Ali yet. “Ali has not contacted me and I have no clue about his decision,” said Bukhari.
