Terrorism: Man believed to be behind church blasts arrested
Initial investigation reveals that he is a member of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan Jamaatul Ahrar
LAHORE:
A man suspected of involvement in the suicide blasts at two Youhanabad churches was arrested by the city police in a joint raid with intelligence agency officials on Wednesday.
An official who took part in the raid identified the suspect as Abid Baig Muawiya. He said initial investigation revealed that he was a member of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan Jamaatul Ahrar, the banned outfit that had claimed responsibility for the attack. The suspect was later moved to an undisclosed location for interrogation.
The official said that the raid was carried out in a neighbourhood near Bhatta Chowk based on information collected from a phone conversation intercepted earlier in the day by intelligence officials. At least 17 people had died and more than 80 suffered injuries in the terrorist attack on Sunday mass at Christ’s Church and Saint John’s Catholic Church in Youhanabad.
