NGO empowers Afghan girls through skateboarding
The NGO was founded in Kabul and uses skateboarding as a gateway to get young girls involved in education

In many Afghan families, customs forbid girls from doing many activities considered normal otherwise, such as riding bicycles. In a bid to empower young girls and women, a non-government organisation (NGO), Skateistan, has begun teaching children to skateboard.The innovative NGO was founded in Kabul and uses skateboarding as a gateway to get young children, especially girls involved in education.
In a tribute to the struggle faced by these children, UK-based photographer Jessica Fulford-Dobson created a photo series of the girls learning to skateboard at the NGO’s branch in Kabul. The NGO has since opened branches in Cambodia and South Africa. The initiative provides these girls with a source of physical exercise and fun.
