Jahangir pleased at Sharif’s departure

LAHORE: Supreme Court Bar Association president Asma Jahangir said on Tuesday that she was pleased that Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif was completing his term.

Talking to the media on the LHC premises, she said she would look forward to a good working relationship with the new chief justice, adding that she hoped he would work towards consolidating the ties between the bar and the bench.

She said she hoped the new chief justice would be more mindful of the legal requirements for taking suo motu notice in any matter.

Commenting to the outgoing CJ’s recent statement that he would keep working for the welfare of the people, Jahangir said she hoped “it would not be like what he did to promote the ‘welfare’ of the bar and the bench during his tenure”.

On missing persons’ issue, she said current numbers were nothing like those witnessed during the Musharraf era but added that of late there had been a sudden surge.  She said that overall situation of human rights had improved over the past mostly due to increased awareness among citizens.

Regarding the PCO judges, she said she believed that the Supreme Judicial Council was the only competent forum to decide their fate.

Meanwhile, the Lahore High Court Bar Association hosted a farewell tea party to honour Justice Khwaja Muhammad Sharif.

The gathering was attended by LHC judges, the LHCBA office bearers as well as some senior bar members.

Justice Sharif is retiring on Wednesday on attaining the age of superannuation.

A full court reference will be held at the LHC at 11:00am. Later in the day, there will be a farewell ceremony.

Justice Sharif was elevated to the LHC in May 1998 and made the CJ on April 14, 2009. He will be replaced by Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry.
