KARACHI:
So far the police have found no leads as to who was responsible for killing the SHO of the Preedy police station or attacking the vice-principal of Jinnah Medical and Dental College in separate incidents on Thursday.

Vice-principal and US national, Debra Lobo, 55, was shot and injured by unidentified motorcyclists as she left the college to go home in her car. She was hit twice in her cheek and shoulder at Shaheed-e-Millat Road. She was taken to the Aga Khan University Hospital where doctors said her condition was stable. She is still under treatment. An FIR has been registered under Section 324 of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, at the Ferozabad police station by the victim's husband, Christopher Lobo, against unidentified persons.

"The investigations are still in their preliminary stages," Ferozabad SHO Aurangzeb Khattak told The Express Tribune. "We are still trying to verify which group carried out the attack on the vice-principal - was it the same group that left the leaflets or someone else who is just using their name."

The investigation is being supervised by zone East police chief, DIG Munir Shaikh. Sources claim this is the first reported incident in the city where militants have claimed affiliation with the Islamic State. "If this is true, it means that there is IS presence in Karachi," said a source. The police have recorded statements of witnesses and Debra's students.

Preedy SHO

Police officials investigating the case of the Preedy police station SHO, Aijaz Khwaja, who was shot dead on Korangi Road on Thursday said that they were looking at the case from different angles. "It has been confirmed that this is not related to earlier attacks on Khwaja's predecessors who were also gunned down," said SHO Kanson Dean. "It is a blind case for us and will take time to investigate." He added that an FIR under Sections 302/32 and 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act had been registered on behalf of the state. AIG Ghulam Qadir Thebo has announced Rs3 million as award for those who help the police to arrest the culprits in both the cases.
