National Challenge Cup: Tournament kicks off with K-Electric’s win

KARACHI:
Pakistan Premier Football League (PPFL) champions K-Electric kicked off their 2015 NBP National Challenge Cup campaign with a 3-1 win against SNGPL at the Faisal Town Ground in Lahore on Wednesday.

K-Electric dominated the Group D match from the beginning as their key striker Muhammad Rasool scored the opening goal in the 22nd minute, while captain Muhammad Essa scored in the second minute of injury-time to lead 2-0 at the interval.

Rasool sealed the win for K-Electric in the 72nd minute with his second goal, while SNGPL only managed a consolation goal through captain Ahmed Faheem in the 86th minute.

Meanwhile in the Group A match, former national champion PIA defeated Saif Textile Mills 1-0 at the Railways Stadium as Habibur Rehman scored the winner in the 75th minute.

Meanwhile, Higher Education Commission (HEC) stunned NBP 3-0 in their opening match at the Model Town Football Ground.


Awais Riasat scored the first goal in the 44th minute as HEC took a 1-0 lead at the interval and then struck another goal in the 52ndminute, while Ali Raza secured the win with his goal six minutes later in the Group B match.

The National Challenge Cup is the second most important tournament in the Pakistan Football Federation calendar, with 12 teams competing in the month-long event.

The federation is offering a prize money of Rs250,000 to the winners, while the runners-up will take away Rs150,000, and the bronze medal-winning team will bag Rs75,000.
