Tuwairqi Steel to set up solar module manufacturing unit

Tuwairqi Steel Mills Limited (TSML) has planned to set up a solar module manufacturing factory, capable of producing up to 12 megawatts of solar modules, initially at a cost of $2.5 million by the end of 2010, officials say.
A solar cell manufacturing plant will also be set up, which will manufacture up to 30MW of solar cells in 2011, at an estimated cost of $15 million. Research studies are currently under way for setting up a pilot project for wind energy costing $30 million. TSML officials revealed this at the inauguration ceremony of the Applied Research Centre on Friday. National Bank President Syed Ali Raza and Al Tuwairqi Holdings Chairman and CEO M Tariq Barlas were present on the occasion.
Ali Raza said: “We firmly believe that the engineering sector is the driving force behind economic growth of a country and Pakistan needs to invest in this sector and integrate it with global markets.” He highlighted the tremendous potential of Pakistani engineers and emphasised the need of providing resources and visionary leadership to them, so that they could aggressively contribute to the economic growth of the country. He quoted examples of Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore which have exploited their potential in the engineering sector, and said “it is high time for Pakistan to also focus on this sector.”
The research centre, inaugurated on Friday, is poised to undertake research and development activities in emerging technologies which could replace the conventional ones in future. It will have a vision to benefit the nation and to become the first engineering research centre of Pakistan to have patent research products of international repute to its credit. Al Tuwairqi Holdings Chairman M Tariq Barlas said that Pakistan has the potential to enhance its share in international exports in the engineering sector. They are at present a mere $266 million per annum.
