Four big gas projects needed

One Mashal project will not meet demand: SSGC.

KARACHI:
Pakistan needs four Mashal gas projects to meet its ever-growing energy demand, said Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) Managing Director Faizullah Abbasi on Monday.

Considering the growing energy demand, the present Mashal liquefied natural gas (LNG) project is very unlikely to help the country. Energy shortage in winter is around one billion cubic feet of gas per day which is expected to cross 3.2 billion cubic feet per day by 2015, he said while speaking to businessmen at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Abbasi revealed that he held a one-to-one meeting with Karachi Electric Supply Company CEO Tabish Gauhar where financial concerns of the two important utilities were discussed.

He said he underlined the need for the KESC to immediately arrange finances and pay SSGC dues, adding KESC dues to the SSGC has increased to Rs25 billion from Rs16 billion over the last 10 months, which is a cause for grave concern.

Replying to a question, he said no plans were under consideration to supply gas to more provinces. The SSGC is a cash-strapped company trying to reduce unaccounted-for-gas (theft and leakage) losses, he said, adding the present team of the company was sincerely trying to solve structural problems.
