Aqeel wins Sindh Tennis Championship

KARACHI:
Top-seed Aqeel Khan won the Sindh Ranking Open Tennis Championship, defeating third-seeded and younger brother Yasir 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in a three-hour match.

Testing a new strategy, Yasir played aggressive shots as opposed to his traditional baseline game, but the top-seed Aqeel showed better skills in the first set to win it by a convincing margin. In the second set, however, Aqeel seemed tired and out of touch which Yasir capitalised on taking the final into a deciding third set. Sensing his chance, Aqeel picked up his game in the third set to lift the trophy.

“It was a good match,” Aqeel told The Express Tribune.”I made a comeback in the last set which was very special because I was playing against my younger brother and we practice together a lot so he can see my moves and it was nice to see him play that well.” However, Aqeel admitted that his experience was the key factor behind his win and that Yasir had played the match with a lot of grace. Earlier, Aqeel and his other brother Jalil won their men’s doubles event as they defeated Imran Shoukat and Saif Noor Sumar 6-2, 6-2.

The Khan brothers exhibited a brilliant serveand- volley game, making their opponents work for every shot in the match that lasted for an hour. “Shoukat and Sumar gave us a good fight but in the end it was our experience and coordination between each other that helped us overcome a good team,” said Jalil. Meanwhile, Islamabad’s Sarah Mansoor defeated teenager Maheen Dada 6-0, 6-1 to claim the women’s singles title.
