A 19-year-old girl committed suicide by jumping into a well in Rajoa police area in Chiniot on Sunday.
The Rajoa SHO told The Express Tribune that the girl, a resident of Chak 144, had been in love with a boy in the neighbourhood. He said when her parents refused to allow them to marry, they eloped. He said the girl’s parents called a panchayat that asked the boy’s family to return the girl back to her parents.
He said when she was returned, her parents arranged her marriage with another boy in the neighbourhood. He said on Sunday, a week before the nikah, she jumped into a well in the area and drowned. The SHO said a police team had fished out the body. He said it was later handed over to the family for burial. He said her family did not wish to pursue the matter and denied permission for an autopsy examination. The SHO said no case had been registered on the matter and the body was with the family.
