Speakers call for continuing struggle for the rights of fisher communities

Rights activists and development experts paid tribute to Tahira Ali, an activist of fisherfolk communities, on Tuesday.
The reference was organised by Mehergarh for Tahira Ali, who died in a road accident near Sujawal on March 10, said a press release.
Ali was associated with the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) and had been working for the rights of fisher communities of Sindh.
She also started a movement named “Noori” which works for the rights of women in fisherfolk communities of Sindh.
Lok Virsa Executive Director Dr Fauzia Saeed emphasised the need to carry forward the struggle Tahira Ali started for the rights of fisher communities. She said that leaders like Tahira Ali need to be recognised for the change they bring in the society.
Tahira Ali’s daughter Yasmeen Shah, who is also the secretary of Noori’s board, talked about the her mother’s commitment towards the cause.
Oxfam Pakistan Gender and Communications Specialist Mustafa Talpur said that mobilisation of fisherwomen was a breakthrough Tahira Ali achieved.
