FAISALABAD:

The Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) has advised its chairman, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, to surrender to police.

Four cases were registered against Raza and dozens of others after the SIC held a protest demonstration in Faisalabad on March 26 and a number of baton-wielding activists forced businesses to close down.

A meeting of the SIC central executive body discussed the issue on Sunday. They urged Raza to consult lawyers and then visit the relevant police officers. Asad Rafiq, an SIC spokesman, said SIC activists were not involved in the forced closure of shops. “Following the registration of cases, police have been harassing SIC activists,” he said. He said that every citizen had a right to peaceful protest. “The government should withdraw the cases registered against SIC leaders. Otherwise, we will hold more protests,” he said.
