Annual repair: Canals to close from April 1

Earthwork and stone-pitching will also be carried out wherever required during the closure

SUKKUR:
The Dadu canal and the North-West canal system branching out from Sukkur Barrage will remain closed from April 1 till April 30 for the annual repairs, said an official announcement on Friday. According to Sukkur Barrage chief engineer, the barrage’s gates will be oiled and greased during the 30 days of the annual closure. Subsequently, the floor of the off-taking canals will be inspected and repaired, if needed. Besides, the earthwork and stone-pitching will also be carried out wherever required during the closure. According to irrigation officials, the practice of lubricating the gates helped ensure their smooth functions throughout the year. Sukkur Barrage chief engineer has asked the North Sindh Urban Services Corporation to make alternative arrangements for the smooth supply of drinking water.
