6 things Pakistani fans will miss at the World Cup

Misbah, Afridi and the dropped catches are just some of the things we will miss

Pakistan’s World Cup dream came to an end on Friday with Australia completing an emphatic six-wicket victory against the Green-shirts. 

With the Pakistan team returning home and all-time favourites captain Misbahul Haq and all-rounder Shahid Afridi retiring from the one-day format, it is safe to say the tournament will never be the same again.

Here is a list of six things all Pakistanis will miss at the tournament:

 

1. Misbahul Haq

You don't know what you have till it's gone. Popularly known as ‘tuk tuk’ for his calm and collected approach to the game, Misbah’s greatness will perhaps be realised by Pakistanis a little too late. Misbah has been Pakistan's rock for the last few years and we can only hope that we find a captain that can match his resilience.

2. Shahid Afridi

It's not easy to describe Afridi or what he means to the average Pakistani fan. The unpredictable heart-throb of our nation didn't live up to his reputation in World Cup but we all know cricket will never be the same without the 'boom boom' factor. His presence on the pitch gave us hope, made our hearts skip a beat, made us believe when there was little reason to believe. The ‘boom boom’ of cricket will be sorely missed. But don't be too disheartened, we will surely see Lala in the next Pespi or Head & Shoulders commercial.

3. Selfies

Struck by selfie fever, we are still having a hard time accepting the ‘selfie kings’ will never again snap away on the field ever again.

4. Dropped catches

Clearly, butter fingers is a Pakistani national team problem. Taking the spotlight away from the Akmal brothers, Rahat Ali and Sohail Khan also dropped crucial catches in the quarter-finals on Friday.

5. Watching the matches

Be it staying up all night long to watch the match or taking up the role of arm-chair analysts, we will all miss the excitement and frustration that comes with watching our boys play. From jumping with joy to switching our TVs off, fans will miss going through the emotional roller-coaster we have all become accustomed to. There is possibly no other team which makes cricket this intense and exciting.

6. Comparisons to the 1992 team

After endless similarities were drawn to the 1992 team, Pakistani fans realised that World Cups aren't won on superstitions. And if they are, are you okay with the thought of a third tenure for the Nawaz-led government?
