Sindh government urges President to stay Shafqat Hussain’s execution

The Sindh government said late on Wednesday that it had appealed to President Mamnoon Hussain to stay the execution of Shafqat Hussain.
Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon, while talking to a Geo Television correspondent said that the provincial government has appealed to the President to stay the execution of Shafqat.
Memon said that this particular case was different from those of other convicts. He added that keeping Shafqat's young age in mind, his case should be reviewed on humanitarian grounds.
The minister hoped that the President would play his role in these circumstances.

Hours before his execution, ‘underage’ convict Shafqat Hussain’s family on Wednesday presented his birth certificate to the media in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The move comes a day after Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar asked for proof to establish that Shafqat was juvenile when convicted.
Shafqat’s family presented the birth certificate issued by local government and Rural Development Department Secretary Town Committee of Kail in which his date of birth was written as October 1, 1991.
Members of civil society, and human rights organisations also made an impassioned plea to ‘Save Shafqat’. They also tried to march to the Presidency to urge the President to consider his mercy petition.
