Nine murder convicts sent to gallows

Today's executions come a day after 12 were hanged - largest since moratorium on capital punishment was lifted

LAHORE:
Nine murder convicts were hanged on Wednesday in jails across the country, Express News reported.

The hangings took place a day after 12 convicts were sent to gallows, the largest number of people executed on the same day since an unofficial moratorium on capital punishment was lifted in December.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted a de facto moratorium on capital punishment a day after Taliban gunmen attacked the Army Public School, killing 132 students and nine teachers. The slaughter had put pressure on the government to do more to tackle the militant insurgency.

Jhang

Two convicts - Ghulam Muhammad and Zakir Hussain -  were executed early morning in Jhang District Jail. Muhammad was sentenced to death for murdering his brother-in-law in 2000 while Hussain was sent to gallows for committing a murder due to personal enmity.

Attock


Convict Asad Khan was executed in Attock Jail for killing three members of the same family in 2002.

Lahore

Death row prisoner Tahir Bashir, convicted of murdering a resident of Subzar area, Arshad Ali, was executed in Kot Lakhpat Jail.


Faisalabad

Two convicts – Shafaqat Ali and Muhammad Syed – were also hanged for killing two brothers in 1998. While, the execution of a death row prisoner Irfan alias Shaani was halted.

Rawalpindi

Shaukat and Muhammad Shabbir were also sent to gallows for committing murder.

Mianwali

Death row prisoner, Ahmed Nawaz, convicted of murdering Jawaid Naami in 1998 was also executed in Mianwali jail.
