Unreleased funds: Sherpao urges govt to attend NFC meeting
Flays PTI administration for failing to address people’s needs.
PESHAWAR:
Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) Chairman Aftab Sherpao has urged the provincial government to attend the next meeting of the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award only on the condition that Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s pending share of various funds is released.
He was speaking to a delegation of political workers from Buner district who recently joined QWP.
According to Sherpao, the provincial government should have taken the opposition parties into confidence in this regard rather than threatening to boycott the NFC meeting.
“Such steps will only harm the interests of the province and its people,” he said. “Furthermore, the decision to boycott the NFC meeting will weaken the provincial economy and cause a loss of Rs50 million to the provincial exchequer.”
Last week, the provincial government had threatened to boycott the next meeting of the NFC Award if the federal government fails to release the province’s pending share.
According to Minister for Finance Muzaffar Syed, the federal government has yet to give K-P a total of Rs6 billion as its share in the net hydel profit for fiscal years 2013-2014 and 2014-2015.
Voice of dissent
Sherpao also flayed the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led government for failing to address people’s needs.
“The government has failed to provide relief to underprivileged sections of society,” he said. “People are struggling to make ends meet and are even finding it difficult to afford two square meals a day.”
The QWP chairman also raised concern over the scourge of militancy and lawlessness in the province.
“Extortion and target killings have become the order of the day,” he said. “As a result, people from privileged backgrounds have decided to move to other parts of the country.”
