PESHAWAR:
The contributions of authors and poets to Pashto prose and literature from 2014-2015 were appreciated at an award distribution ceremony at the Khana-e-Farhang-e-Iran on Sunday. A poetry session was also held on this occasion.

The event was organised by the Hangu-based Daryaab literary society for the second consecutive year. Poets got together from across the province to present their poems and ghazals.

“The purpose of the event is to highlight the services of Pukhtun writers who have continued their work despite difficult situations in Pakistan and Afghanistan,” said Shams Figar of Daryaab.

He said poets had to adapt to changing times and were working towards making Pashto poetry and literature available online. Shams urged intellectuals and poets to make their work accessible for readers so they could get much-deserved recognition.

The organisers of the event said that they had limited resources to continue their efforts for the promotion of art and literature, but were still attempting to do so.

Daryaab also distributed shields among literati. Zubair Hasrat, a leading researcher and writer, was awarded for his research on Pashto poet and intellectual Dost Mohammad Khan Kamil Mohmand titled Dost Muhammad Khan Kamil Jwand Aw Adabi Khidmat.

Author Wagma Saba Amir was awarded for her novel Jannat Kot.

Similarly, Kabul-based poet Mustafa Salik received an award for his poetry book titled Saprlay Pa Khaal K, Professor Mehmood Ayaz for his poetry book Bia Za Hum Pa Saya Badal Shwam, Farhad Wasim for his book Da Mataloono Pa Laar and Riaz Tasnim for his work Da Kum Rang Me Kasheed Kray.

The poets gathered on the occasion had the opportunity to recite their works which included both humorous and serious poetry. “I am grateful that Pukhtuns are organising literary events in these volatile times,” said Wagma Saba Amir who won the award for the best novel Jannat Kot.  She lives in Prague and sent a message to the gathering. Amir said more such events should be organised to highlight the efforts of Pukhtun writers.
