ISLAMABAD:
The police on Wednesday included Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) in the case registered against unidentified men for allegedly killing two Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco) officials on Tuesday.
Rural SP Yasir Afridi told The Express Tribune that the ATA section had been added to the murder charge in the FIR as the act caused a sense of fear among the masses.
On Tuesday, the bodies of lab assistant Anwar Zada and lineman Ansar Wadood were found in the limits of Shehzad Town Police Station.
IESCO employees stage a protest at Aabpara Chowk demanding the arrest of the culprits and enhanced security for field staff.
“No official will go for recovery without being provided with security,” said Iesco Labour Union President Zahir Gul, adding that the employees had rejected the Rs2.5 million compensation announced by Water and Power Minister Khawaja Asif for the heirs of the murdered employees. Gul said that the amount should be Rs5 million.
All Iesco offices in the region remained closed, he said. Gul said there would be no further protests till Monday after Inspector General of the Islamabad Police Tahir Alam Khan assured protesters that the culprits would be arrested soon.
At the same time, Afridi said that the police always provided security to government institutions and officials and it was a mistake on IESCO’s part as they never informed the police before going for recoveries.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered an immediate inquiry. He also said that power theft should neither go undetected nor unpunished.
The prime minister directed law enforcement authorities to ensure full protection to Iesco personnel and extended his deep condolences to the bereaved families.
