IRSA suggests water surcharge

Indus River System Authority bids to get out of financial crunch.

In a bid to get out of a financial crunch, the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) has suggested that the government impose a water surcharge.

According to sources, a lack of adequate funding to monitor dams and canals has prompted Irsa to make this suggestion to the government.

Irsa has asked the government to impose one paisa per kilowatt surcharge on hydroelectric power generation.

This can generate more than 200 million rupees annually in funds for Irsa.

Sources say that Irsa has also requested the government to make it an autonomous body to improve its performance.
