Workers’ welfare: Govt urged to check child, bonded labour

The government should introduce effective legislation against child and bonded labour, said participants of a meeting on Saturday.
The All Pakistan Workers’ Confederation had arranged the meeting at Bahktiar Labour Hall on the eve of International Women’s Day. Pakistan Trade Union Federation President Rubeena Jameel, Salma Yasmin, Osama Tariq, Muhammad Anwar Gujjar and Akbar Ali Khan addressed the meeting.
They demanded that the government provide protection to women workers and allocate adequate funds for their training. They stressed the need for setting up police stations headed by women officers to deal with cases related to crime against women. They favoured steps against dowry and ‘lavish’ weddings.
All Pakistan Workers’ Confederation General Secretary Khurshid Ahmed demanded implementation of the International Labour Organisation’s Convention 100 stressing ‘equal pay for equal work’ for women workers.
