Senate elections: Reply sought on plea against Sajid Mir’s nomination
The petitioner said Mir was not a professor according to the criteria set by the Higher Education Commission.
LAHORE:
Lahore High Court on Monday sought a reply from the Election Commission of Pakistan by Tuesday (today) on a petition challenging acceptance of nomination papers of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Sajid Mir, who is also the chief of Markazi Jamat-i-Ahle Hadith, for Senate elections.
Petitioner Qazi Hussain Siraj told the court that the ECP had accepted Mir’s papers on a PML-N ticket. He said Mir did not fulfil criteria prescribed under Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution.
He said Mir was the chief of Markazi Jamat-i-Ahle Hadith and could not contest election on another party’s ticket. The petitioner said Mir was not a professor according to the criteria set by the Higher Education Commission. He asked the court to restrain Mir from contesting Senate elections.
