LAHORE:
The Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) has planned to open 27 awareness centres throughout  the country in order to  educate people about what  intellectual property  rights are and why they are critical for a competitive economy due to ongoing globalisation.

“IPO has recently approached 35 universities through the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and 27 IP awareness centres would be opened soon in prominent universities of the country,” said IPO Chairman Shahid Rashid during his visit to the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (Smeda) on Friday.

Besides chambers of commerce and industry, SME hubs in Sialkot, Gujranwala, Gujrat and Wazirabad would also be brought on board through industry-specific associations, he added.

He said that a close relationship was being established between the IPO and the academia and industry to make the creative community aware of their intellectual rights. He desired to establish similar collaboration with Smeda to further educate the businesspersons running small and medium industrial units.

The Smeda-IPO collaboration would prove to be highly instrumental in creating awareness of intellectual property rights among the SMEs, which are considered the backbone of the economy. He underlined the need of utilising effectively the services of Smeda’s regional business centres in this regard.
