London visit: Nisar urges West to do more to curb Islamophobia
Says freedom of speech doesn’t allow humiliating Muslims
Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan urged the West to do more to curb Islamophobia, saying a conscious plan of certain vested interests to demonise the great religion of Islam must be stopped on a war footing.
He made the remark while meeting his British counterpart Theresa May at the Home Office in London on Tuesday.
Chaudhry Nisar stressed democracy and freedom of speech in no way give a licence to anybody to humiliate Muslims, distort their religious beliefs and make jest of their religious personalities, said an official statement.
War against extremism, he stated, can only be won through global unity and those spreading Islamophobia are the biggest divisive factors in bringing the international community together.
The Washington summit had been a huge success but now its resolutions must be implemented, he added.
Theresa May said her government attaches great importance to its relationship with Pakistan and we will do everything to further strengthen these bilateral ties.
Meeting British NSA official
Meanwhile, Nisar Ali Khan also met British National Security Adviser (NSA) Sir Kim Darroch at the Cabinet Office on 10 Downing Street. Matters of mutual interest in both bilateral and regional context came under discussion.
The interior minister underscored UK’s important role in bringing East and West together in the fight against extremism. He called for a stronger and more aggressive global response against elements targeting and humiliating Islam.
While sharing Pakistan’s comprehensive strategy to defeat extremism and terrorism, Nisar informed the National Security Adviser about the national consensus evolved in the shape of National Action Plan and the progress it has made so far.
Commending Pakistan’s efforts in the fight against terrorism, Sir Darroch assured continued cooperation from the British side. He appreciated the resolve of the government and the people of Pakistan to deal with terrorism in a comprehensive manner.
