Renewable energy: Biomass can solve power crisis, improve environment

LCCI says country could become an industrial hub by tapping clean energy.

LCCI urged the government to promote alternative energy resources since reliance on conventional resources is one of the biggest reasons for the ongoing energy crisis

LAHORE:
The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has urged the government to promote alternative energy resources since reliance on conventional resources is one of the biggest reasons for the ongoing energy crisis.

“We have to plan for the future now, otherwise Pakistan would become a trading place instead of an industrial hub,” said LCCI President Ijaz Mumtaz in a statement.

He said that bioenergy is a versatile source that could not only be used to overcome the electricity challenge, but also has the potential to convert a wide variety of waste into clean energy.

“Bioenergy can play a vital role in the production of carbon-neutral fuels of high quality. It can address environmental issues like global warming and greenhouse gas emissions and foster sustainable development among poor communities,” Mumtaz said, adding that this source is easily available in rural and urban areas.

Expressing concern over the depleting gas reserves, he said the country desperately needed some good alternatives and viable solutions.

“A wide range of biomass resources, particularly wood and organic waste, is present in abundance in Pakistan; only serious efforts are required to establish necessary modalities to commercialise it on a mega scale.”

The LCCI president also said that the chamber will hold special training sessions for the guidance of technical people with latest trends in new alternative technologies to increase their efficiency.

Leading academic scientists, researchers and scholars will be brought together under one forum to come up with a joint strategy to make best use of this technology.
