KARACHI:

Days after the joint investigation team (JIT) report of the Baldia factory fire laid the blame on the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the party chief requested the armed forces to investigate the case.

"An investigation committee should be formed comprising three army officers in whom the army has trust and confidence," said MQM chief Altaf Hussain, in a press statement on Saturday. "They should investigate the case and bring to light the real facts."

Hussain appealed to the army chief, General Raheel Sharif, to carry out fair investigations along with public hangings of the criminals responsible for the fire.

Earlier this month, the law enforcers presented a JIT report in the Sindh High Court in which they claimed that MQM activist Rizwan Qureshi, the main accused, set the factory on fire because he was not given extortion money. The fire claimed the lives of around 259 workers on September 11, 2012. The MQM denied, however, that Qureshi was affiliated with the party and claimed there was a ‘conspiracy’ in place against it. Meanwhile, the MQM chief also called for a foreign probe into the matter.
