SUKKUR:

The Sindh Bank branch in Shikarpur could not honour the compensation cheques given to the families of the victims of the attack on an imambargah by the chief minister.

Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah gave these cheques on February 11 to the families of the victims of the attack on Karbala Maula Imambargah. He handed out cheques worth Rs2 million to the heirs of the deceased and those of Rs0.2 million to the families of the injured.

When the recipients of the cheques went to Sindh Bank to deposit them for clearance, they were informed that funds are not available in the particular account. Some cheques were returned to the deputy commissioner, Shikarpur, for correction, as either the names of the victims or their fathers were wrong. Those cheques are still lying with the deputy commissioner.

Deputy commissioner Hadi Bux Zardari told The Express Tribune that some cheques were returned to him because of an error in the names of the victims or their fathers. “They will be sent to Karachi for correction,” he said. “I know nothing about the cheques being honoured or not.”

Shuhada Committee member Mir Hassan Shah, who lost his brother-in-law in the deadly attack on the imambargah, said that the cheques had been dishonoured because the Shuhada Committee refused to budge an inch from carrying out the long march. “Today, negotiations between the Sindh government and the Shuhada Committee have proved fruitful and we have been told that funds are being transferred in the account,” he said.
