Local elections: LHC defers petition till April 16
Government’s counsel had requested the court to defer hearing as matter was pending before Supreme Court
LAHORE:
Justice Shehzada Mazhar of the Lahore High Court on Wednesday deferred till April 16 the hearing of a petition seeking local elections.
The government’s counsel had requested the court to defer the hearing as the matter was pending before the Supreme Court. The judge accepted the request.
Advocate Rizwan Gill, the petitioner, had earlier stated that holding the local government elections was a constitutional obligation. “The provincial government has been violating the law by not holding the elections. He said the Supreme Court had earlier given a deadline for holding the elections. “However, the government failed to comply with the order,” he said. He requested the court to direct the government to immediately hold the elections.
