Falling friends: Academic seeks action against PU admin
Rehan accuses varsity administration of tolerating ‘immoral activities’.
LAHORE:
Punjab University (PU) Law College Faculty Member and Hostel No3 Warden Khujista Rehan exhorted IGP Mustaq Ahmed Sukhera on Wednesday to take action against the varsity administration for the “illegal and immoral” activities going on at girls’ hostels.
Rehan claimed that the hall secretary had personally intervened in hostel affairs. In a letter to the IGP, a copy of which is available with The Express Tribune, she alleged that he had tried to get girls accommodated at hostels. “These include girls whose sessions have expired,” Rehan said in the letter. She said that he had been doing this under the supervision of the Hall Council chairman and the vice-chancellor. Rehan said she had written to the VC in this regard. She said some of the staff at Hostel No3 had been transferred after she wrote to the VC.
Rehan said this was unprecedented. Rehan said she had urged them to stay put. “I cannot afford to leave the premises at the mercy of the PU administration,” she said in the letter. Rehan said the staff had been asked to file their replies by Wednesday. She said she had not relieved them of their responsibilities. “I urge you to investigate the hostels’ affairs and register an FIR against those responsible,” Rehan said. She said she had been compelled to write to the IGP as the Muslim Town police feared incurring the wrath of the vice-chancellor. “Please look into the matter to guarantee students’ safety,” Rehan said.
The PU spokesperson categorically rejected Rehan’s allegations. He told The Express Tribune that she had been pressing for a media trial of her case to stop an inquiry against her. The spokesperson said she had failed to substantiate her earlier allegation of sexual harassment. He said the varsity administration had taken no action against her so far due to an order by Lahore High Court (LHC). The spokesperson said she had a history of behaving aggressively with colleagues and students. He said she had claimed in 2013 that she had been harassed by the VC in 2009. The spokesperson said a record of the text messages exchanged between him and her had been submitted to the court. He said the record had not corroborated Rehan’s allegation.
