Shooting at PIMS: Family demands injured doctor’s treatment in UK

The young doctors association (YDA) of Pims has announced a strike on Monday (today) to condemn the shooting of the hospital’s cardiology chief at the premises on Saturday and demanded ‘foolproof security’ for all medical staff.
Dr Usman Khaild, president YDA Pims, said all the outpatient departments of the hospital will remain closed and only the emergency department will remain functional.
“We all are under threat and it is not possible to work under such poor security”, he said.
A press release stated that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif took notice of the incident in which Dr Shahid Nawaz, the hospital’s cardiology chief, was shot and critically wounded by unidentified attackers.
The premier directed the Ministry of Interior and relevant departments to heighten security of sensitive places in the capital, especially hospitals and schools. He also wished the injured doctor speedy and complete recovery.
Nawaz is said to be in critical condition and is admitted to the surgical ward of the ICU. Talking to the media, Dr Nawaz’s daughter, Hafsa Malik, asked the PM to provide an air ambulance to take her father to UK for treatment.
She made clear that her father had no enmity with anyone and termed the incident as terrorism. “Pims was already under threat and my father has become its first victim,” she said.
Pims official Dr Waseem Khawaja told The Express Tribune that on the premier’s directives, a medical board has been constituted for the injured doctor’s treatment. Sharing details, he said the board includes Dr Brigadier Abdul Ghaffar, head of the neurological department of Combined Military Hospital Rawalpindi, Dr Khaleequz Zaman, Dr Arid Malik and Dr Nadeem Shehzad.
The Margalla police have not made any arrests so far, but claimed to have ‘gathered evidence from the place of the incident’.
A special team, headed by Saddar SP has been constituted and will conduct raids on the basis of intelligence, said a police official.
