Twin boys, sister crushed by tanker
They were standing behind the water tanker when it slipped.
KARACHI:
Three siblings lost their lives in a tragic accident when a water tanker ran over them on Thursday. The children were playing outside their house in Baldia Town within the limits of the Ittehad Town police when the incident took place.
SHO Imtiaz Ali Jatt identified the victims as six-year-old twin boys, Abdul Basit and Usman, and their seven-year-old sister, Mariam. Their father, Muhammad Nazir, is a labourer who works at a local factory. “The incident took place when they were playing in front of their house in Abidabad, a slum area,” said SHO Jatt. “The water tanker, which came to this narrow street to provide water to the residents, slipped and crushed them as the children were standing behind it.”
Basit died on the spot while the other two were immediately taken to a private hospital. However, doctors said that they had died long before they reached the hospital. The bodies were later shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, from where the family took them away without autopsies.
According to Jatt, the police have confiscated the water tanker bearing registration number JE-5222 and arrested its driver, Faqeerzada. He had earlier managed to escape from the scene but later surrendered himself to the police.
Following the incident, neighbours gathered and shouted slogans against the authorities for not laying down the infrastructure for water supply. “The residents tried to set the water tanker on fire but the police stopped them,” said Jatt.
