Orthopedic workshop for manufacturing artificial limbs inaugurated for the physically challenged.

ISLAMABAD:
An orthopedic workshop for manufacturing artificial limbs inaugurated here at Al-Farabi Centre for the physically challenged. Secretary Ministry of Social Welfare and Special Education KB Rind was the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the workshop which was jointly organised by CBM Germany, CHEF International and Ministry of Social Welfare and Special Education.

Francois Muller, an orthopaedic technician, demonstrated the process of orthopaedic and prothesis fitting of artificial limbs for both children and adults. He said the first step is the measurement of the real leg. The fake model made of plaster of paris  is fixed under or above the knee joint.

Each artificial limb takes 48 hours to be ready and fixed, he said. Initially, the facility is available free of cost for the students of Al Farabi and other centres working under the Ministry of Social Welfare and Special Education. Later, Muller said, physically disabled children and adults affected from bomb blasts, earthquakes, floods, road accidents or other hereditary disabilities will be targeted with the collaboration of CHEF International. Muller said the workshop has been established with the allocation of 150,300 euros.

Muhammad Daud Khan, Chairman CHEF International, assured that the organisation will provide training and capacity building of required staff for the centre and outreach activities. He said CHEF International will also provide technical expertise necessary to implement the agreed project and has set up a prosthetic and orthopaedic Workshop at Al-Farabi Special Education Centre for physically handicapped children in G-8/4.
