PESHAWAR:

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched a round of campaigns to raise awareness about increasing climatic changes in the province, officials said on Wednesday. One of the methods employed will be mass text messages to the public about how to be environment friendly.

In addition to informing the public, environmental training sessions for line departments have been held in  Peshawar, Mardan, Nowshera, Swabi, Swat, DI Khan, Kohat, Haripur and Abbottabad districts so far. Officials of other departments such as wildlife, police and forest were trained by social activists and experts on ways to protect the environment using the relevant laws of the province.

“We are going to train and educate law-enforcement agencies and other stakeholders of the province,” Climate Change Cell Deputy Director Afsar Khan told The Express Tribune.

“Thousands of text messages will be circulated among the people of the province,” said the official. “Contracts have been signed with different cellular companies in this regard.” In addition, signs have been put up at busy areas and main roads to teach the public about nature and climate.

The Climate Change Cell is a three-year project to create awareness and finds ways to combat climate changes. Khan added climate change affects all aspects of life, including agriculture, industries and architecture.
